The Start: From Lungmen to Grown Men

I guess I should start this blog with a post on my blogging experience. In the beginning, a friend created a website in GeoCities. This is a time when the word "blog" does not even exist and Internet is still a new technology to many people in Malaysia. He created it and let us contribute to the content.

We tried to give it a cool name but also wanted it to reflect our aspirations on the new virtual world. Inspired by Silicon Valley, the cradle of information technology, the website is called "Lungmen Valley". The pronunciation of Lungmen in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) is very close to that of "useless men". So, we were in fact not very ambitious!

Back in 1996, graphics on websites are mainly simple JPEG or animated GIF pictures. Sometimes we would scan or "digitalise" photographs for publication on our website. We also learned HTML coding by ourselves to edit the website on Netscape Navigator or even Notepad!!

As Internet becomes more common in Malaysian household, we created our own personal website on GeoCities and left Lungmen Valley to the originator. A few years later GeoCities was bought by Yahoo! and I seldom maintained my personal website due to daily works. Sadly, Yahoo! closed down GeoCities in October 2009. Looking back the 90s, many popular software and tools have disappeared on the Internet. For examples, ICQ has been replaced by MSN or Yahoo! Messenger, GeoCities personal website are replaced by Facebook, blogs or Twitter. And the Lungmen have now become grown men!
